Joe and Rose Mattioli met at Temple University. She was a podiatry student and he was a dental student. They became known as the "Hoof and Mouth" doctors among their colleagues. They opened their practice in 1952 in Philadelphia and a few years later went to the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania to pursue a dream. That of bringing auto racing to the New York and Philadelphia regions. The dream eventually became a reality when Pocono Raceway opened in Long Pond in 1968. Dr. Joe or "Doc" and Dr. Rose eventually gave up their professions respectively to devote full time to making the Pocono Motor Speedway one of the best in the nation. Doc is the driving force behind the growth of Pocono Raceway. He knows racing, drivers and more importantly he knows people. That is the reason Pocono Raceway has become successful on the American racing scene. The other part of the brain trust, Dr. Rose, is always a lady whose smile is ever present. While Dr Joe is the "head" of Pocono Raceway, she is most certainly the "Heart" of it. Dr. Rose was instrumental in providing an area at Pocono Raceway for religious services for teams and their families. The Mattioli's are totally dedicated to making constant improvements to the track and its facilities for the comfort of appreciative fans and participants. |
